Josephine Alice Lloyd: 1938-2025

Posted

I am sad to announce that on January 15, at home in Edmonds, my dearest sister, Josephine Alice Lloyd, passed away.

Jo was born in Bristol, England, in 1938 to Albert and Evelyn Martin, and her early years during WWII were spent with family in the city while her father served in the British Army abroad. Peace came, and with his safe homecoming and a move to the countryside for new beginnings, she was joined by her brother Stephen’s arrival in 1947.

The family settled in the Cotswolds and Jo, after leaving her high school, Katherine Lady Berkeley’s School in Gloucestershire, sought a career in banking. She was married and emigrated in 1968 during the early Boeing years to Mukilteo, and continued her career.

Jo was a member of the Greater Edmonds Chamber of Commerce and made two visits to establish a twinning with Hekinan, Japan, in 1988. She saw the start up of the Edmonds National Bank on 4th Avenue and was an active Rotarian. She co-founded Edmonds in Bloom, was on the committee for the popular annual Taste of Edmonds and Hot September Nights Classic Car Show

Volunteering was close to her heart. She assisted young children at the local school with their reading and fund-raised for charity. She was a docent at the Museum of Flight in Mukilteo and Cascadia Art Museum on the Edmonds waterfront. For her dedicated efforts, the mayor of Edmonds, Gary Haakenson, proclaimed her Citizen of the Year in January 2003.

Her marriage to Evan Lloyd in 2000 brought the enjoyment of an extended family in Skagit Valley and Snohomish County, and another enthusiastic chamber volunteer. Jo's subsequent retirement meant she and Evan could travel, seeing many countries, including her own part of southwest England. Evan passed away in 2014, but Jo continued with her support for the promotion of Edmonds until her health declined in 2024.

Jo loved Edmonds and was a longtime resident. She was an inspiration and mentor to many, and her friends and family mourn her passing.
