At about 5:45 a.m. Saturday, South County firefighters responded to reports of smoke in the Westgate neighborhood of Edmonds.
No fire was visible from the street, but crews noticed condensation on windows at the Gyro Makers restaurant in the Westgate Village commercial center.
According to South County Fire, firefighters encountered heavy smoke and an active fire inside the unoccupied business when they entered the building.
Firefighters knocked down the main body of the fire in under 10 minutes, while other crews worked quickly to prevent the fire from spreading to other businesses.
Gyro Makers sustained heavy damage, and the adjacent Savi Spa + Nails sustained moderate damage. The first-arriving crew’s situational awareness and persistence to locate the fire were critical in preventing further damage.
One firefighter was evaluated on scene and returned to duty. No other injuries were reported.
At least 17 units responded to help control the fire. The Shoreline Fire Department provided mutual aid. South County Fire is currently investigating the cause of the fire.
"We remind everyone," said South County Fire, "please avoid driving over hoses at the scene of a fire. This can burst or drag the hose, causing injuries and possibly damaging your vehicle. Thanks for your patience and extra care during firefighting operations."
A South County Fire sign on one of Savi Spa + Nail's windows warned that entry into the business was not advised for 72 hours.
A sign at Gyro Makers warned that reentry into the business was prohibited.
